Dr. Robert J. Kaufman is the President of TransDerm Technologies LLC, a San Francisco Scienceä company developing and commercializing technologies and products for the non-invasive diagnosis of disease and human conditions at the point of care.
Dr. Kaufman received his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1974) and his BS in Chemistry from the University of Missouri (1970). He was the founder of Gateway Chemical Technology, a company specializing in custom organic synthesis and process development primarily for the pharmaceutical industry, and has served as Chairman since 1995.
He was formerly Vice President of Research and Development at HemaGen, where he was responsible for initiating and managing programs in perfluorocarbon-based blood substitutes, lipid-based MRI contrast agents, ultrasound contrast agents and emulsion formulations of Taxol.
Dr. Kaufman has expertise in product discovery, product development, formal pre-clinical studies, IND preparation and management of clinical trials. Prior to joining HemaGen, he was employed by Monsanto Agricultural Products Company, where he conducted synthesis programs in Roundup® chemistry, herbicide antidotes and turf growth regulators.
Subsequently, he was Director of Plant Sciences, a group chartered with developing products based on the use of molecular biology in plants and microbes. This group pioneered the development of products based on the use of the gene for insecticidal protein from Bacillus Thuringiensis (BT) in transgenetic microbes and plants. Dr. Kaufman is an inventor on 23 U.S. patents and an author of 25 scientific publications.
